Title: What do character-level models learn about morphology? The case of dependency parsing
Abstract: In this talk, I will give an overview of my PhD work, with focus on our recent work on understanding what character models learn about morphology. Character-level models are effective for parsing morphologically rich languages. This is attributed to their ability to learn morphology, but the extent to which they do is unknown. We seek answers by comparing them to an oracle with access to explicit morphological analysis on twelve languages with varying morphological typologies. Our results highlight many strengths of character-level models, but also show that they are poor at disambiguating some words, particularly in the face of case syncretism.
